Hollywood movies about Alzheimer’s disease.

Thought it would be interesting to make a list of movies that deal with Alzheimer’s disease, so I did a google search and came up with…only two.

Iris (2001) about the life of writer Iris Murdoch, including her battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Review: Life’s painful truth, perfectly performed

Away with Her (2006) about a woman slipping into Alzheimer’s disease.

Review: ‘Iris’: Heroic on a a Human Scale

Can anyone think of any other movies that deal with Alzheimer’s disease?

I’ll have to own up here and say that I’ve seen neither of these movies…will have to put them on my list of things to do on a rainy day.

Have you seen them? What did you think of their portrayal of Alzheimer’s disease?

  1. Driving Miss Daisy (I’m not sure of the year) was about an older lady needing some care, not exclusively about Alzheimer’s. I saw it while caring for my mom with Alzhemer’s and could relate. So many situations reminded me of Mother and helped me understand Mother.

Living in the Labyrinth is a book about a woman’s experience as she realizes she has Alzheimer’s. This was made into a TV movie, possibly 5 years ago.

I’d forgotten about Driving Miss Daisy…

Found another one that had some Alzheimer’s references – The Notebook

  3. Yes, how could I forget The Notebook. Have you read the book? We might see about finding some novels that deal with Alzheimer’s…in a dignified way.

what is the one where the lady has the names of her family members written on pieces of paper so that she can remember them??

The second movie you mentioned is not Away With Her, as you called it but Away From Her. I saw it in flight, and it was an excellent experience. It touched me to see their love, and the cruelty of how the disease affected them both.

  6. Liz Lewis says:

Sorry about typo….you are absolutely correct Chris…the title is Away From Her…and I too saw it just recently in-flight…amazing movie…

    thanks liz

  7. I’ve heard so many rave reviews about this movie that I’m anxious to see it. The movie was listed in the in-flight magazine when hubby and I were flying recently. But we were going in the opposite direction! So I missed it.

A movie that deals with Alzheimer’s is The Notebook.
