Home Cooking – A Must-Have for Me and You

Growing up, I never had the inclination to learn how to cook. Living in the tropical country with no airconditioning in the kitchen, I couldn’t really be bothered with literally boiling while cooking or baking something in the kitchen. Besides, my mom was a great cook and we had a full-time cook to assist my mom so there was nothing really that compelled us to help out.

These all changed of course when I moved to New Zealand and left the comforts of my parents’ place and full-time house help. Here in New Zealand, I had to learn how to be independent. One of the things I had to learn real fast was to cook. If I didn’t, I’d have to suffer my husband’s specialties: crumbed fish, french fries and sausages. We could’ve also chosen to get our nutrition from canned food but I vowed that’s not going to happen in my household. I grew up to the delicious smell of homecooked food at all times so I’d be buggered if I won’t do it for my family. I’d learn how to cook even if it meant burning pots and pots of meat! LOL

It’s been 8 years since I was forced, err, I learned how to cook and I’m happy to report that I haven’t poisoned any of my family members or friends and that I have been encouraged by well-meaning friends to open a Filipino restaurant. Is this a testament perhaps to my Jamie Oliver-type of cooking or they just want other people to suffer my cooking as well? :-)

Home cooking is one of the ways to show your family that you love them. That’s what I think anyway. I love it when my daughter says I’m the best cook in the world or when my Hubby boasts to anyone who’d listen that I’m a great cook.

Next goal for me? To become more proficient with baking. I’d keep you posted on how that goes *wink*
