Homemade Chocolate Syrup

 chooclate syrup

We raise Nigerian Dwarf Dairy goats and so, for 9 months of the year we have huge amounts of free, raw, organic milk.  The other three months we spend way to much on organic milk at the store!

Anyway, the kids love chocolate milk.  I mean, who doesn’t?  But I do not love the cost or the ingredients list.  I finally learned how to make my own chocolate syrup from cocoa powder and a simple sugar syrup.  It is delicious in milk, over ice cream, or any other way you would use the commercial types but it has no chemicals, no preservatives and will cost about $1.00 or less a quart.

Homemade Chocolate Syrup

  • 1 cup dark cocoa
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

In a saucepan  whisk the sugar and cocoa together until blended.  Slowly add water, whisking until smooth.  Bring to a rolling boil and boil for about 2 minutes, stirring often.

Cool.  Pour into a jar, cover tightly and store in the refrigerator.
