Homemade Cough Syrup

Have you noticed that there are less and less over the counter medicines available for children?  I heard something the other day that said that you shouldn’t give kids cold medicine anymore.  Not sure why..I don’t follow the news that much.

Anyway, there are some great natural cough syrups.  If you are an adult and will be taking it at home  you can add about an ounce of good brandy to this recipe. Not only will you not cough but you will get a good night’s sleep!

Remember that children under the age of 18 months should not have honey.  If you are making this for a small child use organic corn syrup instead and add 1 tablespoon of organic raw cider vinegar.

Homemade Cough Medicine

1 large  onion, peeled and chopped

2 cloves garlic peeled and chopped

Buckwheat honey to cover onion

1 half  pint  jar with a lid.

Add honey, garlic, and onion to a large pan and simmer over low heat, stirring often until the onion is cooked and very soft.  Strain honey into the jar and cover tightly.  Cool.  Add brandy if desired.

Let sit overnight.
Keep refrigerated. Take 1 tablespoon (under 6) to 2 tablespoons (over 6)  as needed for cough.

Mike- generally speaking everything on here is stuff I use at home…unless I state otherwise. Yep..this stuff works at least as well as the commercial stuff, and maybe better.

    Wow Thanks Kelly!

  5. Marye: Thanks for the feedback. I remember, growing up, often when I became sick, my mom would put a teaspoon of honey in some tea to try to soothe my throat.

It’s amazing sometimes the number of uses a natural substance like honey has. Guess it and others are there by design.
    Take care,
    -Mike

    Hello Marye!

This is fantastic! It’s great to see that there are some intelligent people on this planet - WOW!
I always try to give people natural recipes for minor ailments, but they usually twitch their noses and go running to the drugstore; it drives me insane - where’s their brain??!!
