Homemade Toothpaste Recipes

Everything is going up in price, or have you noticed?
Yeah..I thought so. Really, it is kind of funny because the local, organic produce can be found for less than the chemically infused stuff in the store now just because of gasoline prices. I find that funny in an odd sort of way.
Anyway, toothpaste is enormously expensive and I think that is ridiculous because there are not any really expensive ingredients in it! So? Make your own. It isn’t difficult, it is as healthy or healthier than the other stuff and we are talking pennies here. Pennies.
Take the basic recipe and use a variety of flavors to get what you want.
1/4 c teaspoons baking soda
1 tablespoon glycerin
15 drops peppermint oil
or:
try any variation that adds up to 15 drops of the following:
cinnamon oil
clove oil
wintergreen oil
anise oil
Another variation is:
1/2 tsp rose water
1/4 tsp vanilla
And yet another:
add 2 tbs organic coconut oil (antibacterial)
pinch of stevia in place of the glycerin
Personally I like the following recipe:
2 tbs coconut oil
1/4 c baking soda
pinch stevia
1/2 tsp rose water
5 drops cinnamon oil
So, give it a try. See what you think. Better yet, see what your bank account and your dentist think!

Marye… this looks great. A question, though. Do you ever sleep???
Jen. No. Not ever. Ia m still on an amphetamine high fro the summer of 1977…when I finally crash it is going to be really BAD.
Seriously, yes I do sleep. I dont; do ALL of this ALL of the time, but I do what I can, when I can. Make sense?
It totally makes sense. But I had to ask.
LOL Curiousity killed the cat. When I do a post on herbs for energy you will nod …and say…aha!
Boy this sure beats my grandma’s old mix of baking soda and salt. Although I do credit her age old recipe for keeping me cavity free for ummm darn near 41 years now
I’ll be trying this yours real soon. Sounds much tastier
LOL! Gayla. One of my kids wondered if you could add chocolate syrup and get the same results
so, what do you store this in?
Monica -any food safe container works. Or even a jelly jar.
Does it need to be refrigerated or can it just be left out?
What does 1/4 c teaspoons baking soda mean?
Nicole it means that I am a lousy typist…it should read 1/4 tsp
Thanks–I didn’t know if it was 1/4 cup or 1/4 tsp–I’ve got all the stuff–I can’t wait to make it–
This silly.
Toothpaste isn’t “enormously expensive”.
For a couple bucks you can buy regular toothpaste that last several months for 1 person.
So that’s also “pennies we are talking about”, per time you brush teeth.
In regular toothpaste are components that protect you against caries, and your paste don’t.
GFYM- Well, you have obviously not done much research. There are some concerns that the “components” in toothpaste can be more harmful than good.
The health of people’s teeth has deteriorated in the past sixty years or so, not gotten better.
