Honey Is Nature’s Cough Syrup

My beekeeper mom gave us honey for everything when we were kids, and modern medicine has demonstrated that she was on the right track. A new study shows that honey worked better than cough syrup for soothing kids’ coughs at bedtime and helping them sleep.

Federal health advisers have recently warned that over-the-counter cough and cold medicines shouldn’t be used in children younger than 6, and manufacturers are taking some products for babies off the market.

Three pediatricians who read the study said they would tell parents seeking alternative remedies to try honey. They noted that honey should not be given to children under age 1 because of a rare but serious risk of botulism.

Honey is also popular in tea as a sweetner or as a soothing treatment for those who are ill, and as a natural antibiotic. How do you use honey? Leave a comment and let us know.

Our beekeeping company, Bee Blessed, sells honey cough syrups that are safe and effective for kids. Raw honey is somewhat diificult for young children to swallow so we have a honey based syrup that tastes great and thoroughly coats the throat and esophagus. Cough Syrup is available in natural and orange flavors and is $5.95 plus shipping and handling.
