Hot or Not Abandons Free Dating Experiment

After being overrun with spam and fake profiles, Hot Or Not has decided to reverse course and end their free dating experiment. According to an email from founders Jim and James:
“…You also warned us that this would probably lead to more spammers and fake profiles. You were right, this is exactly what happened. The spammers got aggressive to the point where they were screwing up the system, even causing the “someone wants to meet you” emails to not be sent for periods as long as 5 days.”
The site will return to a model of free memberships for browsing and selecting users you are interested in while offering paid memberships for members that want to send and receive messages. Star memberships remain inexpensive compared to most other pay dating sites, starting at $5.95/mo. This is the same model the site offered to users before going free back in May.
I’d like to say I’m shocked at the idea of people posting fake profiles, but com’on, what do you expect?
