How common is shingles?

A recent survey in the United States found that Americans make 2.1 million doctor visits a year because of shingles or its complications. I can believe that. I had shingles and, until I had them, I had no clue how awful they felt.
I thought, how bad can it be? It’s an itchy, painful rash. Well, I can assure you, it’s much more than just an “itchy, painful rash.”
