How long is that pregnancy?

Forty weeks, more or less nine months, seems like a long time. But did you ever wonder how long other mammals are pregnant for a full term?

Here are some gestational periods; some you’ll envy, other’s you’ll like feel a lot of sympathy:

Less than 40 weeks:

  • Baboon: about 27 weeks
  • Buffalo: 38.5 weeks
  • Kangaroo: 7 weeks
  • Guinea pig: 9.5 weeks (a guinea pig takes longer than a kangaroo??)
  • Rabbit: 3 weeks

More than 40 weeks:

  • Horse: 47 to 49 weeks
  • Whale: 68.5 to 70.5 weeks
  • Rhinoceros: 64 weeks

Did any of these surprise you?
