How Many Juice Boxes Can Anyone Drink?

lunchbox.jpgLunch is a rather chance affair for me, usually because, for me, 2pm is the equivalent of the clock striking midnight in the Cinderella story: I grab everything and head for my car to get home to meet Charlie’s bus, and try to cram in as much work at my desk as I can. But I know that if Charlie’s lunchbox ever was not in his backpack, it would be Not Good. I’ve been fortunate that, for this week, my parents have been visiting from California and have not only been meeting Charlie at the bus; my mom (”PoPo”—Cantonese for maternal grandmother—to Charlie) has been making Charlie’s lunch.

One unchanging feature of Charlie’s lunchbox has been a CapriSun juice, Mountain Cooler/Splash Cooler/Pacific Cooler/Surf Cooler flavor. No other flavors or types of juice will do and rather than lug home unfamiliar looking juice boxes in unwanted flavors, we’ve stuck to a rotation of CapriSuns.

(Too true, that a mother learns to choose her battles.)

So, over these past several years of Charlie going to school, and sometimes in un-air-conditioned rooms on hot June days that warranted two juices in his lunchbox, at least—-I can say that we may have gone through enough Capri Suns to sew into a designer dress, like this one by Nina Valenti. And by the time Charlie finishes school, who knows but there may be enough used juice pouches for an entire wardrobe……..

This reminds me of my sun and his particular YMCA water bottle he must go to bed with each night. I have other water bottles, but only the white, with black lettering and the red top will do…and yes, I have found myself begging my local Y for new bottles to replace those lost here and there.

Oh, choosing your battles, I’m right with you there. Some routines are just not worth breaking. Not at all.

  3. It was a big enough deal to have to give up Charlie’s BMX biker lunchbox!

I wonder what it is with Capri Sun? My son will only drink the Capri lemonade. When they recently changed the packaging, it was a crisis! I have a friend whose son will only drink the Capri Gatorade.

Yes, I too hear you on picking your battles. I am lucky, he will drink other things too (rice milk, water, juice in a sippy-cup)–but in the juice pouch world, Capri lemonade rules!

    That dress was incredible!

  5. Charlie’s never liked the lemonade or the orange drink—and he’s never drank more than a sip out of a juice box. I figure it’s something about the shiny packaging!

  6. I agree about choosing battles. Nick does not like the pouches and prefers Gatorade. We were pouring the gatorade into nestle water bottles since the single serve six pack is so expensive. With tomorrow being last day of camp we are done with that since he is homeschooled.

With Matt I was using these reusable juice box containers for his soymilk, but teacher would always send note about mold, it was not mold but soymilk and I used q-tips all the time to clean them. So when I found the six pack soymilk containers at Whole Foods I got them, but so expensive. With camp we went back to reusuable and not sure what to do for Middle school. I saw at 99 cent stores in freezer sections small pint sized silk but too expensive, although looks similar to milk at school lunches. Matt has a thing with Silk containers but only the red ones and these are blue, so may try some out to get feedback from assistant next month.
