How Should An Entrepreneur Spend Her Time?

January 16, 2007 by admin

I certainly didn’t start The Pet Set with the goal of working more and making less money; but there are days when it seems like that’s exactly what happened.

I went from making a significant salary with long hours…to $0 salary and inSANE hours. There isn’t one moment of the day when I am not thinking about The Pet Set.

There are 2, and only 2 things that a small business owner (any business really) should be spending the most time on. Getting customers (sales) and keeping customers (service).

Intellectually, I know that is how my business will grow and become successful…and that maybe someday, I’ll be able to purchase my own lingerie without asking my husband for money.

But here’s the rub, I’m home alone all day…sometimes 14 hours until my husband returns from work.

This makes trying to stay disciplined enough to make those excruciating cold calls, writing the press releases, checking in on current clients and whatever else it takes to bring exposure to my company…a very difficult existence.

But I’m trying. The fact that Rachael Ray is on right now, and that the dog has to go out…may mean that phoning Vogue to see what they thought about my samples…will have to wait.

Wow! Have we met? Many women business owners have the same “pain”. It’s not easy to balance work and family when you are working for home. Its important to realize that you must utilize the same behaviors that made you successful working for someone else work for you in your home based business. When you started your home-based business, you have taken that first step to reach your personal and professional goals. Your home base business is a business that should be treated that way. So, use the same skills that you used as an employee and make them work for you. By, the way, GREAT article.

    You NEED a mentor.
You NEED someone to help you set up a proper realistic schedule to work with.
You NEED to learn to target market…ie, market ONLY to people who already want what you have.
You NEED a ‘Mastermind Group’…This is explained in the book Think and Grow Rich.
You NEED to put yourself in a position where the little that you do, will actually count.
Feel free to call me for more advice…

  1. [...] Kim flatly points out there’s only 2 things a small business owner should do with her time – getting customers (sales), and keeping customers (service). Of course there’s more to running a business than that, but it’s helpful to be reminded of the priorities once in awhile. [...]
