How To Get Back Up After You Fall

I’m up early this morning, and feeling contemplative. I’ve had a rough couple of days on the food front, and it’s showing up on the scale. So I thought I’d post some of my thoughts here this morning about getting up after you fall.
You know what I mean by “the fall,” right? It’s that point you come to sometimes when all you want to do is eat. But it’s almost always for all the wrong reasons.
Last night was another one of those points for me.
I had a late-night emotional binge (not anything major, but enough to hurt me). I was tired and had a lot going through my mind the last couple of days, and I craved junk food. Unlucky for me, there are Doritos in my house right now that I bought for my daughter last week.
After I ate chips, a Weight Watchers 1 point chocolate candy, and a snack pack of fruit snacks, I immediately hit bottom. I knew I would the whole time I was eating the junk food, but it didn’t stop me from putting every bite in my mouth.
How to Get up Again
This morning it would be all too easy for me to stay down in the dumps. I could very easily berate and belittle myself for not making better food choices over the past few days. I could tell myself that it doesn’t matter and I’m a failure for not being stronger. But the only place that would lead me is back on the heavier side of the scale–again.
I won’t do that to myself. Instead, I’m gonna step up, pick myself up, dust myself off, and try again. Today isn’t yesterday, or the day before that. Today’s a new day. I’m starting with a fresh slate.
If you’re struggling, here are some tips on how to get up again after you fall for food:
- Forgive yourself. Stop beating yourself over the head for your mistakes. So you ate too many slices of pizza, or didn’t drink enough water last week. Okay. Recognize your failure, forgive yourself and move on.
- Check yourself. Before you even begin another day, stop and take stock in yourself. Where are you emotionally? Physically? Spiritually? Mentally? If you’re already in a bad place, you have to uplift yourself immediately before you even try to start another day. Get yourself ready; don’t rush into a new day with the same mindset you had yesterday, or you are setting yourself up for automatic failure again.
- Love yourself. Treat yourself as you might anybody else. Nurture yourself through this rough patch. Be kind and gentle. Read an inspirational devotional or immerse yourself in music. Do whatever you know will lift your spirits.
