How to keep up.

I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I do watch a fair amount of TV. Mostly The History and Discovery channels. (I swear). Oh…and re-runs of Sex and the City.

On Sunday’s lately, I’ve been watching Entourage on HBO. And while the plots are silly, the actors are all shiney and fresh…especially the character Vince.

The only problem with watching a show that revolves around beautiful, young guys in their 20s, if you are a woman of my “vintage”, is that there is bound to be phrases, words and references that go over your head.

As a result, I’ve been thinking lately about the amount of energy it takes to remain or get up-to-speed with a younger generation: new technologies, new dress codes, new music, different attitudes about success. Do any of you remember when HR was simply the “personnel department”?

Until recently I didn’t know what a blogosphere was (not a balloon?). But I am willing and committed to learning as much as I can in order to compete with and to stay connected with younger friends and colleagues. I think I now know what an “X-box” is (I don’t have kids, so let that one slide) what Javascript means, how SEO works, and that if you think a cell phone is for just phone calls, you’re out of it.

Oiy…I’m exhausted. I think Entourage is cute, but I gotta tell you…give me Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn in “Sabrina”, and I’m in for the night…and I don’t have to guess at what the phrase “Beg Your Pardon?” means.
