How To Know What Career You Were Meant For?

Many times, you’ll hear everyone from career counseling coaches to Donald Trump say “You Have To Love What You Do.”

Yet, those words often sound so vague to me. What does it mean to LOVE what you do?

I think it means you have to be moved somehow…your soul has to has to scream…This Is It! This Is Me!

Or you have to drool.

I swear, had I not started The Pet Set, I would be in the fashion industry. I love my business…it’s part of my fabric (ha..get it?).

But when I see a Ralph Lauren gown or one of his lush suede boots, literally, I drool.

Not because I want to own the item (oh, come on) but because I wish I could have designed it.

The problem with my “drool” philosophy (aside from its revolting aspect) is that unless you are a child prodigy, you often don’t have a clue about what moves you until much later on.

By that time, your true calling has been camouflaged by life’s demands and/or toddlers.

My suggestion is to start to pay attention to those things that honestly stir something inside…and I don’t mean simply I luuuuve ice cream.

I mean I would quit my job tomorrow if I could become a chef. See the difference?

Become really observant about your world, recognize what your senses are telling you. You WILL hear the scream…or experience the drool, I promise.

I dont know if i’m even meant for a career I love my job because I don’t do much and i’ve been priming for it my whole life hahaha which is nothing! :D

    Hi Amanda,

HaHA…I know what you mean, before I was married, I used to scour the NYTs society pages to see if there was an event I could attend, with the hope of meeting a rich bachelor.

Doing nothing could be what some of us were meant for!

    I guess I still don’t know… and I am keep trying to figure it out… :P
Maybe Amanda was right… doing nothing is what I meant for!

    Hi Anne…thanks for stopping by…

Oh, I don’t know, look at yours and Amanda’s blogs..they are fabulous.

But it goes to my point…I think it may take a life time to figure out what you are authentically meant to do…so have fun trying to get there.

Hi. I have been traveling and I am finally back on line. Great article. Life is great when you are doing so you love.

  6. Kim says:

    Hi Jenny,

Great to see you! Thanks…and yes you are right…if I had to go back to corporate life at this stage, I would have to jump off a bridge.

  7. Jeff says:

No, really, how do you know what you’re meant to do? I tried acting and realized after 10 years that it just wasn’t me. I spent another 10 years just working frustratingly meaningless jobs just to earn a living while I discover my true passion. Now I’m going on 40, I’m unemployed and living back home with my parents and still wondering what to do with my self. I know suicide is not supposed to be the answer, but I think it may be the only way out of this one.
