How to Make a Diaper Wreath

You’ve heard of diaper cakes, well today I’m going to show you how to make a diaper wreath. I made one for my daughter’s friend who was having a second baby after 14 years and she loved it. It’s kind of funny how gifts, favors and decorations change over the years. She keeps her diaper wreath hung on the baby’s bedroom door with a regular wreath hanger.

Here is what you will need:

  • 10 inch styrofoam ring
  • Approximately 15-20 disposable diapers. (make sure they are all the same size diaper)
  • A pack of small rubber bands or clear pony tail holders (you can get a package of about 250 at the neighborhood drug store CVS or Rite Aid)
  • Ribbon to decorate (use two or three different colors to make it stand out)
  • Baby bottles, rattles, teething rings or small stuffed toys to decorate

You start by opening a diapers and wrapping it around the styrofoam ring. Bring the edges of the diaper together and secure with a small rubber band or clear elastic hair holders.

Continue this with each diaper, all the way around the ring. Make sure to overlap each diaper slightly so they don’t come apart after you’ve assembled them. Your diaper ring should look this (photo on left).

When you have your wreath assembled then you can start to decorate it. Start with the ribbon. Take an 18 inch piece of each ribbon color and tie them around each diaper individually. The more ribbon you use, the fuller the wreath will become when finished. Once you’ve finished that step then its time to attach the baby toys/garnishments.

You can choose anything you like as a decoration for your wreath. Put as many as 10 ornaments or as little as 4. I wouldn’t use more than 10 or less than 4 if you want it to look nice. It’s hard to see in this picture, but I used 6. I have a small (4 oz) baby bottle, a pacifier, two rattles and two teething rings.

So for your next baby shower gift or for just a unique gift to give to a new mom, try making a diaper wreath. It’s also a good idea to pick up a plastic wreath hanger from the craft store and include it with the gift. It is fun and it’s easy.
