“Hypoallergenic” Dogs Not Guaranteed

The Internet is loaded with information about “hypoallergenic dog breeds.” However, many experts will tell you there’s really no such thing. While some dogs may be easier on people with allergies, there are no guarantees. If your friend with dog allergies can live with a rat terrier, you won’t know if the same applies to you.
How do you find out? You can to spend time around the dog before taking it home.
According to Mayo Clinic asthma and allergy specialist James T. Li, M.D., the actual source of pet allergies is usually a protein found in the pet’s saliva and urine. The protein sticks to dander, causing allergies in humans. Since dander is on fur, pups that don’t shed may be more hypoallergenic than others. Still, you don’t know until you try.
