ideas for Mother’s day sewing projects

I know that Mother’s Day is tomorrow, but I thought it would still be fun to post some ideas for crafts today :-)

  • Use photo-transfer paper to transfer images onto 100% cotton quilting fabric (it’s smooth finish is great for photo transfer)  Use family or baby photos to make a totebag, cover a journal or even make a wall-hanging.  I also like to add embroidered captions to the photos sometimes – it can be nice to know when or where the photo was taken.
  • Have your children (or whole family, including the dog!) stamp their hands, either directly onto a t-shirt or totebag or onto fabric.  Use acrylic or fabric paint and heat-set to make sure you can wash the finished item.
  • If you have childhood clothing that isn’t really good enough for another generation to use, but is still too precious to throw away – try making yo-yos from it!  A memory quilt made from family clothing is a lovely way to remember :-)

    Hi,

You say: “Use acrylic or fabric paint and heat-set to make sure you can wash the finished item.”

Can you use ordinary acrylic paint on fabric and then iron it to heat-set it so it can be washed without problems?

I didn’t know this… Would be real nice if you could clearify this. Hope you see this… :)

    Hi Lotta,

I just wrote a post about how to handle acrylic & fabric paints here: http://www.tangledthread.com/working-with-fabric-paints/
