MUPS is the acronym for Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms. In Canada, 5% (about 1.2 million Canadians) of patients experience this. MUPS has been broken down in four ways:
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
Fibromyalgia
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Gulf War Syndrome
At least 14% of the patients interviewed, were found to have at least 2 of those conditions listed. Makes sense, I suppose since I hear all the time that FM and CFIDS are often found to be experienced together in a patient.
Other points made in this article are:
Women are twice as more likely than men to suffer from all 3 conditions (not including Gulf War Syndrome).
The rate of mental disorder was higher among people reporting they had MUPS than with the general population.
21% of the subject group had at least one psychiatric disorder, and the rates were highest with those experiencing CFS. Compare this with 8% of the general population who does not have MUPS.
These statistics were reported on the latest Health News, provided by StatsCan on Friday, Jan 12, 2007.
