Every time ANY child dies in the Phoenix, AZ area, it's in the news, sometimes leading the evening news on TV. As a result of all the reporting, and advice on how to child-proof your pool, there aren't all that many deaths, considering how many pools tere are. Every time a child drowns in a pool, the public is educated on pool safety.

(Or so my mother-in-law informed me when we all visited there last year and there was a big to-do in the media about a child drowning in a pool.)

We get the same sort of media education blitz whenever someone drives a vehicle into floodwaters and there's a death or a lifesaving rescue (or both). "Turn around, don't drown" is the slogan they're trying to drill into us in this part of Texas.

We've thought many times about the idea of renting a villa for a holiday, but the idea of Serge spending any time at all within even a mile of an open-air pool fills us with dread.

I guess it's easier for us -- pools are very rare in the UK.
