In search of vegetarian Norway
Both guidebooks and friends have warned me that there’s not much for vegetarians in Norway. The menus feature fish, fish, and more fish.
Looking on the bright side, at least I won’t be spending as much on food this trip (I’m envisioning cheese sandwiches from the bakery rather than a sit-down dinner). Usually I look forward to the eating part of a vacation more than anything, so planning this one has been a little strange.
I’ll let you know how I do.

Don’t worry, Jul, you can almost always find a vegetable. Somewhere!
(And be careful of that cheese – they could use rennent.)
Good luck.
I’m a vegetarian living in Norway – and sure, this certainly isn’t veggie heaven ;o) You shouldn’t have problems finding a decent vegetarian meal in the cities, but it does get quite a bit worse in rural areas. Feel free to take a look at my blog, where you’ll find restaurant reviews and also some info for vegetarians travelling to Norway – for example in this post here: http://norwayveggie.blogspot.com/2008/02/veggie-travelling-to-norway.html
I usually research where to eat before I leave for a trip. Never having been to Norway, I feel for you! In a situation where there is a dearth of good vegetarian food, I usually buy a lot of nuts and dried fruit. There is always salad, of course, and if you bring a can opener, maybe you could find some beans in a pinch.
Have a nice trip!
True, life’s hard being a veggie in Norway, especially living in small towns or rural areas. If you have a possibility of cooking yourself, I would recommend trying to find a grocery store named Meny. They are quite popular and have, as far as I know, one of the widest ranges of different food you’ll find in Norway… Other than that, eating out is quite simple – most restaurants have some kind of veggie dish, and if not, most chefs are willing to come up with something vegetarian.
(This might be a little late, but I’ve been thinking about this a lot myself lately, as I’m traveling to Cuba in january, and expect to see a lot of fish there as well… any tips?
)
Living in London I’m totally spoilt for veggie choices. Just about everything in supermarkets is marked as being veggie if it is (especially cheese), so it was a shock for me when I acquired a Norwegian girlfriend to find out how much harder it is to be a vegetarian there, not to mention expensive!
There are, however, two fantastic Indian restaurants, which are veggie heaven for an English man!
If you still have not traveled to Norway and plan visiting Tronheim, you are invited to dinner. There is possible to find vegetarian food in Norway
Sven – Thanks for the invitation! Next time.
I had a fabulous time in Norway (which you can read about on my personal blog), including Trondheim, where we spent a day. The food situation wasn’t as bad as I feared, and even though I wasn’t delighted by each and every meal, the country was so charming that I didn’t mind.
