In Season Fruits & Veggies~4th of July BBQ

This 4th of July use in season fruits and vegetables to help cut the cost of your Independence Day barbecue. There are quite a few fresh fruits and vegetables just coming into season the first part of July, and some are just getting ready to go out of season, that equals some great produce deals for you.

What types of fruits and vegetables should you be able to save money on this time of year?

• Berries are in right now, and you can find them at rock bottom prices at your local grocer or farmers market. Use strawberries and blueberries to create a red white and blue dessert.
• Watermelon is just coming into season, you can find some wonderful and creative ways to use watermelon, the National Watermelon Board has a database of watermelon recipes.
• Corn is 17 cents an ear right now at our local grocer, and it’s wonderful on the grill (kick it up a notch), or make some grilled corn and zucchini tacos.
• Marinade some onions and cucumber in vinegar and sugar to make cucumber salad, that’s one of my favorite dishes this time of year!
• Combine cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries and blueberries to make a delicious summer fruit salad.
