In the Aftermath, Maine Wants to Ban Guns From Campuses

I know I am on a politics kick surrounding gun right issues, especially since the Virginia Tech shootings. The reason for that is I have 5 young kids at home that will some day occupy these schools and campuses and it really concerns me as to what these facilities will be like in the years and generations to come. Whenever a tragedy takes place it is our nature to try to make things better so that we can live in a better world by learning from our mistakes and finding ways to reduce or eliminate the same problems from ever arising again.

But I think the way we are dealing with these issues is not always the best way. I think our intentions may be all well and good but the I don’t think we are always making the right decisions. For instance, Maine (and I know other states) is looking to ban guns from campuses in a bill making its way to the Maine legislature. By taking this step at banning guns, what does this really do? Do you think by making more restrictions will help prevent instances like Virginia Tech from happening in the future? If you think so then you have another one coming to you. If a person is so distraught he/she is willing to kill 30 people or as many people as they can and in the end kill themselves, do you think in a minute they would reconsider the law surrounding guns?

I will tell you the answer is no.

Ask yourself this, if these people knew prior to committing a mass murder that there may potentially be other people armed then wouldn’t that be more of a deterrent than a law? Maybe… maybe not. But let’s not make it impossible for people to defend themselves against crazy people.

So I see the reaction is based out of fear. People fear guns now because 30 innocent people were killed by using them. So out of fear people respond quickly with ways in which to ban guns. I sort of understand their fear, but making a law doesn’t get rid of guns. The criminal will still hold to his guns because that is what he is… a criminal.

There are people on both sides of the issue but I think this statement is more along the lines of where I stand personally:

“I think what happens is we take an isolated incident and try to react, and when we react we make bad laws,” he said. Cebra said the ban would also keep Maine teachers and professors from being able to protect themselves with guns.

“The worst mass murders have happened in gun-free zones,” said Rep Gary Plummer, R-Windham.

The only thing banning guns does is strip us from protecting ourselves and prevent us from deterring future attacks on innocent civilians. We are tying our hands behind our backs and the criminals know it. The students who walk into their schools and kill innocent people know there will be nobody there to stop them until the authorities get to the scene. Because we have stripped the guns from our innocent civilians and left them to the criminals and law enforcement officers.

So think about it the next time you want to ban guns. You aren’t solving anything. Guns will always be here. There are too many manufactured and are all over the globe. Banning guns will remove them from the law abiding citizens and place them in the hands of authority and the criminals. Is that what you want??

I know I don’t want to tie my children’s hand’s behind their backs and prevent them from ever defending themselves some day. When I go and vote on gun issues why would I do this to our kids??
