Inappropriate Halloween costumes for kids
While looking through a disorganized rack of Halloween costumes at a department store the other day, I came upon something that was somewhat disturbing. Right next to the adult male Chewbacca I noticed a rather risque nurse’s outfit. The nurse costume at Halloween is a perennial favorite of women who are looking to dress a little on the slutty side in honor of All Hallows Eve. Ladies, party on, it’s your decision.
However, at closer inspection I noticed the model on the package was most likely a pre-teen girl. Definitely NOT an adult. I was shocked and quickly placed the larger Chewbacca costume over the remainder of the rack. WTF?!
This morning I came across a great post over at Strollerderby about taking back Halloween and the mass of inappropriate costumes, written from the perspective of a father shopping for his little girl. (If you’re easily offended by language, you may want to pass on reading the whole thing.)
“…the thought of dressing up young girls in midriff-baring costumes, slinky skirts and laced-up baby heels had me spinning. It got worse as the girl costumes got older, as if every year in a girl’s life means another inch of skirt above the knee.
And it had me wondering.
“Would anyone ever sell a Chippendale outfit for young boys? Would a parent ever buy one?”
Of course not. “
My wife and I are having a boy, but all I could think of were my nieces when I read this post.

We have a little boy but I definitely think that having a girl would pose some major challenges today. With Lindsey Lohan and Britney Spears setting not so great examples I think that parents should role model how children should act (dress being one of them)
I have a little boy, but my husband and I would NEVER allow some of the VERY inappropriate costumes we have seen on both boys and girls! Most of the so called role models for our children show too much skin, spew profanity, and have just plain unacceptable behavior…So SAD!
There is so much inappropriate clothes, especially for girls, and not just costumes. It is pretty sad.
Where ever you look in todays world you will find very inappropriate dress. On Barbies, dolls, costumes everything you name it it is there. It is hard to decipher sometimes where things come in and out. We as parents can do our best and hope that our children will follow in our steps. My children so far have been very good and are rather modest. Sometimes my daughter wants to dress like her cousins that are older and I think it will be harder as she gets older.
For halloween this year my 8 yr old daughter will be a princess…like the princess she is.
Proud of their choices!!
For my 5 yr old son - Fireman!!!
I’ve seen a few maid and kitty costumes that should DEFINITELY be for older kids but they weren’t.
Remember back in the olden days you used to pull out the big box of Halloween stuff and make up a costume? Nowadays, we buy everything ready to wear. Does that take some of the excitement out of it?
In any case, since my kids have started helping bring in the mail, I have to be careful to sort it quickly and get the catalogs with trashy costumes out of their sight quickly. So much parental vigilance needed to keep the youth in our children!
I can’t believe some of the stuff that they try to sell for little girls. Why can’t little girls look like little girls and not like mini-adults.
It is always so cold in Colorado anyway that these skimpy costumes get covered up by big coats and hats. Glad I only have a boy. I can deal with the blood and gore much better than the bare skin!
I think it’s sad that so few kids make their own costumes (or have parents make them) anymore.
