Inducing labour with sex? Think again.

I remember going to EDD+12days with my daughter and feeling so desperate to have her out that I tried almost everything in the book before being induced chemically. Sex was one of those things, but it obviously didn’t really work because she popped out at EDD+14 days via emergency C-section. In fact, a recent study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology has found that having sex in the late stages of pregnancy will not bring on labour. Instead, the reverse is true:

… those who were sexually active in the final three weeks of their pregnancies carried their babies for an average of 39.9 weeks. Those who abstained from sex in their final weeks carried their babies for 39.3 weeks.

The difference is negligible; it’s true, but if you’re already overdue and wanting to get things moving along, sex should probably not be top of your list of things to try.

Why do I think this “study” was done by some Christian fundamentalist group trying to discourage us from having sex??? Sounds awfully suspicious to me.

  2. Jean Angus says:

I’m not sure how the study seems like it was done by Christian fundies. It’s about the effectiveness of having sex to induce labour, which in theory is supposed to work because the semen helps to “ripen” the cervix.

I checked out the site and it doesn’t appear to have been written by Christians. But even if it was, Christians aren’t against a married couple having sex.
