The San Francisco Columbarium inside

The four-story Columbarium hosts over 5,000 niches to hold personal remains (ashes) of the interred.  People often decorate the niches with personal items and memorabilia, photos and writings.   Some are serious in design, others, more whimsical.

The urns used range from traditional copper or metal urns to cookie jars, coffee pots and even a few alcohol decanters.  The interior itself is beautiful, with its marble floors, many stained-glass windows, tiered balconies and mosaics covering much of the dome.

The Columbarium holds the remains of some of San Francisco’s most prominent people, including Harvey Milk and many of the city’s founding families.

To see a photo of the exterior of the Columbarium, check out yesterday’s Travel Photo Daily post.
