A friend of mine – she is kind of obsessive about her body – would choose adoption as a first choice. She doesn’t really want to be pregnant or give birth.
But, her husband is really into having a biological child. It’s a deal breaker for him.
Personally, it was important to me to have a biological child. But, if it wasn’t going to happen I would have pursued adoption and I’m sure I’d have been happy with it.
I grew up living all over the world with a military father. I have always known that I would adopt at some point. It is just what feels right to me – to expand my family and extend my love to a child that didn’t necessarily come from my womb. Then we had several events in our lives that questioned my ability to have a biological child. I did grieve that but knew I would be a mom. So, I think it is a little of both, depending on the person. I think most think of having biological children first when thinking of starting a family, but that doesn’t exclude thoughts of adopting or make adoption the second choice everytime.
Do you feel then that celebrities feel the same way you do when they state they want to adopt or do you think they are just flaunting the word adoption to get publicity?
Truthfully, I think it is mostly a power show. And a “quick, painless” way to have a baby without sacrificing body/career. I think adoption agencies or countries or whoever approves these adoptions are probably paid a lot of $$ and are a little star-struck and so rules get bent for them. They probably have the heart to have children, to have someone to love and that will love them. To have a family. Beyond that, I don’t know. I think many do it out of some sort of “saviour complex”; they are celebrities and they are saving this child from whatever life they would otherwise have. It makes them appear more human and real to other people but I am not sure how sincere they always are. It certainly gets them noticed and in the news. Does that equal record sales or movie tickets… maybe. I feel weird judging the state of their hearts. I am sure at least part of them really wants the child and loves the child. But I am not sure of their true motives.
What do you think?
I wrote a post about it a few days ago about how many celebrities are adopting. I think many truly want children and would be wonderful and loving parents. But I think that there are some who just use the word adoption because it garners attention.
I also believe there are some who believe they are saving a child and that always bothers me because of the way our son came to us. People tell me all the time that we saved him, perhaps because he is a special needs child and would not have done well in Russia but most likely because he has done well here.
I agree that it is hard to judge where they are coming from but when I step back and look at the list of celebrities that have come out recently and said they want to adopt it just strikes me as odd.
Either look at my post or at celebritybabyblog.com under adoption
A big reason a celebrity might adopt is vanity. They have to keep the perfect body marketable. Babies don’t do any favors to a woman’s body or metabolism.
