Is Cooking The Secret To A Good Marriage?
We’ve been married for more than 20 years — a veritable “long and winding road”, and for some reason lately, I’ve been thinking about all of the little things in our relationship that make our little world so special.
When we were newlyweds, I had it in my head that the wife is supposed to know how to cook for her husband…but I didn’t. I didn’t even know how to make coffee — seriously.
I remember the first meal I’d ever made him…again, thinking this is what men wanted, I made pot roast.
To me, pot roast meant that you bought a hunk of meat, put it in a pot of water, let it boil forever and then serve with potatoes and carrots.
This thing came out looking like a giant grey basketball.
Well, this is when I began to know how lovely my husband is. I served him and he proceeded to eat every morsel. I’m sure it was disgusting…but he said it was delicious.
As time went by, I taught myself how to cook.
I learned how to master the art of pizza dough-making, I practiced and practiced how to make fine spaghetti sauce…I think I even once attempted the recipe for New York’s famous Magnolia Bakery cupcake.
Recently, I decided to make a pot of chili…because I’d never done it…doesn’t chili always look so good on the Food Network?
Anyway…it came out extreeeemly hot…so hot that you really couldn’t enjoy it. Well, he said he loved it.
I was ready to toss the whole thing, but he pleaded for me not to…”you can make chili dogs” he sweetly said.
He’s been doing stuff like that for 20 years. And I guess sometimes it’s these little, gestures of admiration and respect that are among the things that have held us together.
p.s. He is in charge of coffee.




































I don’t know if cooking is the secret but boy does it win his heart. All I have to do is fix a coconut cream cake and he’s mine forever.
Yes, Michelle that is because everything you do is perfect.
btw…you should publish your Coconut Cream cake…my husband looooves coconut.

It took 20 years…but yes I’ve improved quite a bit since my pot roast days.
My most prized wedding present was a cookbook. It is grease stained and tattered now but I still use it at times.
It can’t be the way to a great marriage because I have a wonderful marriage that I wouldn’t trade for anything, or anyone, and I never cook anything of substance. My poor family
Tonight htey got tomato soup and grilled cheese while I heated up egg rolls from WalMart

That is sooo sweet. I still have my late Mother-in-law’s soup spoons…I know for a fact that she probably bought them at the supermarket 40 years ago.

It’s obvious that he’s loved you dearly, from day one, bad cook or good.

I remember the first time I cooked chips…..I didn’t know you had to heat the fat first!!!!….i put them in cold oil and then heated it…a disaster….I’m please to say that 40 years later hubby loves my cooking

Here is the EASIEST chili recipe ever.
Brown 1 lb. of ground beef in a deep pot.
Add two cans of red kidney beans (liquid and all)
Add two cans of diced tomatoes with peppers and onions (or similar)
Add one small can of tomato paste
Add one envelope of McCormick’s chili seasoning and 3/4 cup water.
Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 min.
Top with cheese, sour cream and jalepenos (if desired)
Guaranteed to please!
