Is Supernanny Doing Our Thinking For Us?

In a thought-provoking article, The Daily Record laments the age of the “Television Guru.” With people on TV instructing us on everything from diet to fashion sense to home décor, are we losing our ability to think for ourselves?

They give special attention to Supernanny:

IT SEEMS we are no longer even capable of bringing up our own children these days.

Jo Frost, 35, bills herself as the answer to every stressed-out parent’s prayers.

As Channel 4’s Supernanny, she is fully qualified to deal with everything from tantrum-prone toddlers to sleepless babies and kids who kick, punch and swear. Her show is also a huge hit in America.

But are we really so insecure we need TV shows to teach us how to bring up baby?

And wouldn’t we be better reading them bedtime stories than squinting at the goggle box?

Valid point, though I’m sure the hundreds of families Jo has reached—both directly and indirectly—are grateful for her advice!

I feel that TV shows are definitely teaching parents how to think. You know my opinion on why? Its because the media has stepped in with what is good and bad for our kids so much that parents seem to be so confused that they dont bother to think for themselves any more. Seems like if you arent doing what is said on TV, then you are a bad parent. We didnt seem to have half as many problems before the TV was invented. However, listening to JO JO, is not a bad thing. With all the bad parenting techniques and opinions going on nowadays, hers are closest to home in how you should be disaplining and interacting with the kids. I didnt need her, I was already using these techniques that i developed personally thru common sense. I have 7 children and 2 out of the home now who are successful. I have all the background of a person who might not have her weight on her side, however using common sense pulled me thru and took me from a disfunctional life as a kid to making a nice functional and disaplined outcome for my kids with a loving home. KEEP UP GOOD WORK SUPERNANNY!!!!
