Here are some practical tips from the book Stop Clutter from Wrecking Your Family: Organize Your Children, Spouse, and Home.
If you or your child is suffering from clutter and it is becoming a real problem, then I would recommend you give this book a try. It puts a fresh perspective on clutter and it is written by someone who can completely relate. Understanding the mind and the inner workings of a child who is a clutterer will make all the difference in the world. After I read this book I understood my daughter a lot better!
- Make it easy to put things up.
- Brightly colored boxes are better than dull cardboard ones.
- Put shelves and drawers at kid height instead of adult height. Watch your child as they try to put things away. Let their actions speak louder than their words.
- If they balk at putting certain items away, try to find out why. Is the item too heavy? Is it difficult for them to put away? If so, try to find another place for it to go that makes it easier on them.
- Say goodbye to that ornate toy box. Clear plastic containers are best for just about everything. If kids can see their stuff, they like it better.
- Help your child discover the wonderful world of grouping by type. Dolls are one type of toy that go together. Toy dishes are another type of item that go together.
Is your child a clutterer? If so, what have you done to make putting things away and keeping their rooms clean easier on them?
