[...] There is a lot of mythology, a lot of lies, out there about autism. According to Anne McElroy Dachel, an autism mother and a Generation Rescue “rescue angel,” the “really big lie about autism” is that better diagnosis is the reason for the rise in the prevalence rate of autism—1 in 150 among American children according to the latest figures from the CDC. I would rather say that, to claim that vaccines, and specifically the mercury-based preservative thimerasol cause autism, is misleading and potentially dangerous. [...]

[...] So I was puzzled to read this question in Kim Stagliano’s latest Huffington Post post: The Expanding Vocabulary of the Autism Mom: “Why hasn’t anyone asked ‘WHAT IT CAUSING ALL OF THIS AUTISM?’” Far from being the “new ‘C’ word in town”—which word Stagliano, the mother of three autistic daughters, alludes to in the opening of her post as “that nasty, vicious four letter word for a woman’s genitals” that is “so mean and desperate” and also at the end—”cause” is a word that one hears rather frequently in discussions about autism, followed by the reeling off of the usual factors, that maybe some children have a genetic predisposition, a weak immune system, but that you never can discount those environmental factors, can you? and one still ought to keep in the mind the they’re diagnosing it better argument……just in case.
They are all at it now, these academic colonisers with not a thought of a genuine disability rights agenda in there exploitation of another newly discovered "tribe"

These latter day Levi Strausses with there designer genes are using us a stepping stone to recognition as surely as Ollie Sacks with all his "wierd tales"

I don't suppose this book will acknowledge any more than Nadesans poor vintage, my DVD which takes a cultural sociological look at autism.

Why? Because they are part of the oppression that they are mapping in there stand back from engagement books.

They are insiders and part of the same cultural elite that named us outsiders in the first place.

I can't hope to compete, I am just a pissed off outsider looking in on there world. Is it any wonder I am unhappy.

[...] For discussion of autism not being an epidemic, go here and here and here. Myself being a Classicist who studies and teaches ancient Greek, I wish to offer a bit more of a sense of the root words of “epidemic.” [...]
