Journal Writing Current Events

August 16, 2006 by Heather Goldsmith

One thing I notice when reading back in my own journals is the lack of details on current events. I do mention anything relevant to myself and my family, but I often leave out anything happening in the news.

Each time I reread entries I make a more concerted effort afterwards to include those events happening around me and in the news. While some newsworthy moments get there without any effort; such as the September 11th attacks on New York; the Indonesian tsunami; and other local events such as voting or more recently the census; I need to work at including notable or unusual day to day current affairs.

  1. Yep, I recently wrote something similar into my diary. I always wanted to include “the big view” as well but find that my writing just deals with my business and my private life. Probably shows how little impact world events have on our lives?

  2. Hi Birgit,
Yes, I often think that might be the case, too. It’s generally only the events that touch me that end up in my journal. I think it helps with locating yourself in the time, on rereading journal entries, to know what else was happening, though. Thanks for your comment. ;-)
