Karen McCarron, who is accused of suffocating her autistic three-year-old daughter Katherine McCarron on May 13th—on Mother’s Day weekend—was in court this morning, according to a news story from News 25. Dr. McCarron has been receiving treatment at a “secured facility” in Springfield, Illinois, since being released on bail June 9th. While a temporary insanity plea has not been ruled out, her attorney, Ron Hamm, noted that she is no longer at risk of suicide.
Dr. McCarron’s pre-trial hearing has been pushed back to August 24th, so that new evidence can be submitted. According to an article in today’s Peoria Journal-Star, McCarron
… pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of obstructing justice and one count of concealment of a homicidal death in May 13 death of her daughter Katherine.Authorities say McCarron has confessed to suffocating her daughter, who had autism, with a plastic bag. They say she tried to kill herself the following day with an overdose of Tylenol.
It is going to be one long summer of waiting for justice for Katherine McCarron.
