Karen McCarron sat next to her attorneys in Tazewell County Circuit Court and heard her husband, Paul McCarron, describe for the jury their life together before his wife allegedly suffocated the girl with a plastic garbage bag.

Paul McCarron said his wife was often very critical about the mental progress of their daughter, Katherine “Katie” McCarron, who had autism.

Prosecutors said Karen McCarron killed the girl because she wanted autism out of her life and would not accept a child with a disability.

It was an emotional morning of testimony for Paul McCarron in the murder trial of his former wife.

He was the first person to testify against Karen McCarron, the former Morton pathologist accused of killing her 3-year-old autistic daughter.

In often tearful testimony, Paul McCarron said he had noticed improvement in his little girl’s verbal skills after she received treatment at a special school in North Carolina.

But, just days after returning from the school, little Katie was dead, allegedly at the hands of her mother.

Tazewell County prosecutors are painting a picture of a mother trying to get autism out of her life during opening statements in the murder trial of Karen McCarron.

McCarron is the former pathologist from Morton accused of killing her three-year-old autistic daughter.

Prosecutors told the jury McCarron did extensive research on autism trying to cure her daughter of the disability.

Karen McCarron’s attorney also told jurors that she “has dealt with depression since the mid 1990’s. They also said she has a history of depression in her family and mental illness.”
