Kids Health Notes give-away: Playdate Kids potty training book

June 9, 2008 by Grace Ibay

After that other post, I guess we’ll talk potty training now…

One of my parenting hang-ups is potty training. For the life of me, I can not get my 3YO daughter to use the potty! I think I tried every trick in the book – rewards, stickers, calendars, motivation, and I hate to admit – frustration too. Still she would not. She knows how and will sometimes pee, but potty #2 is just a struggle. And I have a feeling I am not the only parent in the world that has this dilemma (raise your virtual hands, please!… please?). We can sure use all the help we can get.

playdate-kids-Potty-partyWell… Playdate Kids just sponsored to give-away 10 copies of the award-winning book on potty training – “Island Potty Party”  (Mom’s Choice Award Winner). Each book includes a CD, sheet music and simple dance routine to reinforce the lessons.

How to join?

  • In the comments, share your tips on getting toddlers to potty train.
  • Additional entry will be given to those who link this contest post on their site! You need to include your post URL.
  • Eligibility – one entry per person per email daily (so you get more entries if you come back tomorrow, but I need different tips each time).
  • It’s open to residents of the US. If you have a blog, do post your URL as well, as I love to visit my readers’ sites and catch a conversation.

Contest ends 12:00 midnight EST on June 23, 2008 (Monday). Ten winners will be randomly chosen and announced via blog and email the week after. If the winner does not reply within 3 days, he/she forfeits her winnings and an alternate winner will be chosen.

    Wonderful prize and website!

  7. charline s says:

I always used the reward system. I used a chart with stickers and when they got the required stickers (about 2 or 3) they got a small reward of some kind. I think it was also easier with me having boys I potty trained them in the summer months and being outside watering the grass or whatever helped. LOL

  8. Linda Moeller says:

    Nice prize.

  9. Stephanie V says:

No advice yet as son is almost one, but I am petrified of the whole process.

  10. Carol Blevins says:

    I could so use this.

  11. Oh… Thank you so much for pointing me to your giveaway!

With two little girls under the age of two, I’ve introduced the 1.5 year old to the potty, she’s used it once, but she seems apprehensive.

    I could so use this!

With six kids total, I’ve been potty training off and on for years. But since my oldest three are in their teens, its been a while.
I remember the reward system, lots of stickers and ice pops!
Oh.. and new panties, those seemed to work really well!

I hope I win this, any new ideas would be great ;)

  12. Monique Rizzo says:

Stickers, Treats and charts oh my!

  13. Adrienne Gordon says:

the potties that make noises seem to interest my kids.

  14. djp says:

    this better work!

  15. David Benedict says:

this would be perfect as my son just turned 1 year old

  16. Tesa Shelton says:

Boys respond well to rewards! However, if they wake in the middle of the night and you’re not up – they are apt to pee in your flower pots. So if you notice your flowers dying for no other reason, and you have a little boy, that could be it!!! :)

  17. Shirley Younger says:

    Hope I win

  18. Christy says:

I wish I had advice, but we’re just starting. At this point, I could use all of the help I can get!

  19. Noelia Gutierrez says:

read stories to them, and also don;t force them, that is the main thing.

  20. Phillip Fry says:

First time parent that would love to win!

  21. Heather U says:

We have a little while before we’ll start potty training, so I don’t have any first hand advice. But my mom said she would pour warm water between our legs while sitting on the potty to make us pee.

BTW, thanks for your great comment on my blog yesterday! I hope you’ll visit again soon!

  22. Kristi Cochran says:

I need this to help potty train my son.

  23. Teresa Hoyt says:

This may sound insane, but with a boy try giving him a “target” (square of toilet paper). Lol, I know it sounds strange, but it can turn an unpleasant experience into a fun one!

  24. Belinda A. says:

Be excited about every attempt made by the child to go potty.

  25. Deanne S says:

We had a party when my son used the potty all day…..He never went back to diapers. We told him if he went potty all day we’d have a pee pee and poopie party with cake, streamers balloons and a present. He worked hard to earn it and after the party day I just used little reinforcements like M’M’s, stickers, hand stamps etc. to keep it fun.

  26. I have no tips. I need some.
Well…one tip. Don’t make it a power struggle. You won’t win!

  27. Rachel Fox says:

I’d love to win this for my brother! He and his wife are having a really hard time training their little girl, and just had a little boy, so they sure could use this! Thanks for the offer!

  28. Susan C says:

My tip is to make the toddler excited about training. Rewards work well!

  29. Teresa Hoyt says:

The best advice I can give is that every child IS different and some take MUCH longer to potty train, so don’t panic if “Timmy” isn’t trained as quickly as “Susie” was!

  30. Carol Blevins says:

Thanks for the contest. We could use this at our house.

  31. Sara says:

This would be great to use at the daycare center I work at!

  32. Belinda A. says:

Implement a reward system, a little treat for each time the child goes potty.

  33. Steve Scott says:

I keep thinking about the money that I could save if we could get out of diapers. I like the reward system idea. Thanks

  34. Belinda A. says:

Let your child help pick out the potty, because if there’s something about the potty he doesn’t like, he won’t use it!

  35. Teresa Hoyt says:

Let your child pick a favorite book to peruse while sitting on the potty. The more they relax, the sooner they will do the deed!

  36. Adrienne Gordon says:

    persistence is important

  37. mary boemmel says:

This would be great for my grandson.

  38. Andrew Gordon says:

    Never give up!

  39. Mel says:

I think the key to the whole process is establishing a routine. Sitting on the potty at certain times each day is what made it a lot easier to potty train my daughter when she was younger.

  40. Teresa Hoyt says:

Play favorite music or give the child a favorite book so they can relax!

  41. Tesa S. says:

Use rewards that toddlers understand, like small pieces of candy.

  42. susan varney says:

    sounds like a cool idea

  43. Tammy says:

I’d gift this to my sister who has a little one, almost ready to train – but I used Toilet Training in Less than a Day book and it worked for my 2 1/2 year old.

  44. Anna Thurman says:

I wish I had some tips, right now I’m in need of potty training tips myself!

  45. Barbara Baker says:

My way of successfully potty training a toddler is to lavish them with praise. It works every time. Oh, and don’t forget to through out those diapers (or take them to your local good will store). When my children turned two (the day of) I told them it was time to be a big girl/boy and began coaching them, praising them, asking them a million times a day until the knew they needed to go and last but not least…we didn’t go anywhere until they were trained. As a reward when they successfully went pee on their own in the middle of the night…we would take them to their favorite place to eat…”Cracker barrel”.

It works every time. Shoot, if you praise an adult you can get a lot of success their too (LOL).

  46. dean says:

this would help with my toddler!

  47. Susan C says:

My tip is to take your child shopping for “big kids” underwear, and make a big deal out of it. They won’t want to get them wet.

  48. Candis Hansen says:

    My tip is M&M’s

  49. Kari Follett says:

Make the switch to big kid underpants, not pull ups. They didn’t work for us because they were too diaper-y.

This ends on my birthday so..pick me, pick me! :)

  50. wow how cool now this i could realy use thanks
