Kids Health Notes give-away: Sakura Sticklers

So, how is school, so far?

Most of my friends’ kids right now are up to their eyeballs with homework, projects, crafts and papers that need to be turned in for school. It’s getting to be a very busy year for parents and their young students. If your kid is feeling a little too “ho-hum” or “aaack!” with school, I have just the thing to get her some breather.

Stickler-kits Sakura has generously sponsored to give-away 10 sets of Sticklers Kits, each with die-cut stickers and Sakura Glaze or Souffle Pens. Cool isn’t it? She (or he) can decorate her stuff with the pens and stickers and make them stand out, more personalized, more jazzed. I played with the Sticklers myself and now my cell phone, key chain, scrapbook, binder and laptop have Sticklers all over them. Uber-FUN!!! It really is like eye candy for young artists! And it’s just the little thing you need to get some smile back.

So, who’s up for it? Here’s how to join:

Answer this in the comment: How do you help your child cope with schoolwork?

  • One entry per person per day.
  • It’s open to residents of the US only
  • Contest ends 11:59 midnight EST on October 12, 2008 (Sunday). Ten winners will be randomly chosen and announced via blog and email the week after.
  • If a winner does not reply within 3 days, he/she forfeits her winnings and an alternate entry will be chosen.
  • REMINDER #1 : In previous contests, I have had several winners forfeited for failure to reply to my emails.  Please make sure your settings don’t put my email into the junk folder, then you’ll have no idea you actually won. Better yet, please check this blog out for the winners’ list after the contest ends. Best bet, come back often and stay a reader!
  • REMINDER #2: Only entries with legit answers will be included in the draw. There are good reasons I ask these questions in Kids Health Notes. Actually, only a few forget to answer the questions, but I really want to include all commenters into the contest, so just take note of that when you join. And as always, I appreciate the conversation. Have fun here!

UPDATE: This contest is now closed.

We don’t try to get it all done at once, it can be overwhelming for them after a long school day. I let them unwind a bit and we tackle a couple things then have more relaxed time together and finish up the rest of the work.

  2. Rosanne Morrison says:

My youngest is a junior in high school. I have raised 3 already. Homework is one of the worst expereences of my life along with buying boys shoes and bathtime whne they were little and flooded the room . THere has to be no distractions-no TV, computer, video games etc. They have to be in a room quiet to get it done. They get to unwind for a while after school, eat then do it. Can’t wait too late or they are too tired. All have graduated at the tops of their classes- one a valedictorian at the best school in our city another at the worlds finest language institute. Very proud of them

  3. susan varney says:

teaching them how to figure out how to get the answers on their own

  4. Julie K says:

We try to keep homework time as stress free as possible, especially when the kids are having a hard time understanding a concept. I let them take a break and get back to it later.

  5. shannon Baas says:

Try to find a way to make it fun. Play a game with spelling words.

  6. Sandy says:

mine get a snack and get a break..wasn’t school enough- get some destress time then sit down and work a little with them using their brains..I refuse to do their homework or , I am not in school, I may guide but do not do it for them

  7. Nora says:

First we let them have a snack when the come home. Then we encourage them to begin and we sit down with them. Sometimes they are easily distracted and I find that is when something is difficult for them. so we try to find out what is confusing and try to find a way to make what they are learning fun.

  8. DAVID BREWSTER says:

Limit their TV an Computer Game time.

  9. Work with them and reward them when they are correct!

  10. jennefer sweitzer says:

I work one on one with each one and send the other one to do something else while we are working, That way is is quiet and they have all my attention.

  11. beth shepherd says:

After they get home and have their snack I turn off the tvs and give the 2 year old a coloring book and set all 3 down at the table. We go through each page together in quiet. It seems to work for them and for me. Thank you!

  16. Terri L says:

We have set homework time…right away after school. We found that if we wait too much else gets in the way and/or the kids start to get too tired to deal with it.

  17. charline s says:

We do homework about 15 minutes after the kids get home from school. That way it is over and done with and they can go lay.

  18. I think homework should be done when they get home from school. sometimes it is hard with all the after school activities.

  19. Evelyn says:

I have him do his reading out loud in the room i’m in and i always check over it. I help him redo anything that he didnt understand.

  20. Kari Follett says:

I let them relax for a bit after school, then hit the books after we have a snack. If they need help, I offer it.

  21. Amy W says:

Well, our best bet is to have a snack and then work on homework. If we take a break and then try to do homework, the momentum is lost and my son is more interested in everything else going on in the house.

  22. Elizabeth M. says:

After a quick re-energizing snack after school, my kids get started on their homework right away. Then it’s almost always done by dinnertime and they have the rest of the evening to relax and do whatever they want. That eliminates the stress of cramming to get it done before bed and while they’re starting to get sleepy.

  23. Vicky Boackle says:

be there for them to ask questions and check work.

  24. Debbie says:

They do their homework right when they get home….then they get to choose what we ALL do for the next hour.

  25. Lorrie Iqbal says:

I want them to think positive and know that they can figure out any problems in paper and in life.

Homework is done right when they get home :)

  28. Karen Gonyea says:

    Homework First !!!

  29. Jennifer M says:

My daughter is in K and doesn’t have homework yet. When she does, we will make sure there is a designated, supervised time and place for it.

  30. Elizabeth M. says:

My kids know that if they need help with homework, I am ready and available. They like for me to quiz them for tests, etc. and I try to make up phrases and funny ways for them to remember things. I just want them to know that I’m here to support them no matter what.

  31. Lenora Garrett says:

My son is only in preschool but he already has homework. I try to make it fun; you know something we want to do, then something we HAVE to do. I praise his attempts at everything, and try to let him know that has long as he does his best then I’m happy with that. Homework times has become quality time together, which I hope continues throughout his school experience.

  32. Jennifer M says:

We keep one spot sacred to schoolwork, and make sure there are no visual or auditory distractions.

  33. Vicki Wurgler says:

after school its usually snack time and they unwind for awhile. then they tackle their homework at the table and they are pretty good about it

  34. Erma Hurtt says:

I help by sitting there with him and help him figure it out.

  35. Rebecca Davenport says:

Some parents make their kids do homework right when they get home from school, after they have already been there all day. I let them play for awhile and have dinner, then do homework. That gives them time to clear their mind and ready them for the work.

  36. Rebecca Davenport says:

Please edit my comment and put “play” where I put Plat!

  37. Jennifer Hedden says:

I help them with it when they need it

  38. Pamela Hansen says:

with 4 I have purchased workbooks so that if someone doesnt have homework then they do a worksheet so that everyone is at the table doing homework and no one is watching TV or playing

  39. Laura Emerson says:

We make it an enjoyable and relaxing time for all of us. We sit at the kitchen table after dinner as a family and almost make it a game. Not only do our children learn better as they are more relaxed but it also gives us some family time which can be hard to have when life is so hectic.

  40. Paula Harmon says:

Make sure you have a nice clean area for homework. I have supplies in a “homework box”, and I will bring them a tray of snacks (so the “I’m hungry excuse doesn’t come up), but the most effective way is for me to sit with them, not even helping, just being near, folding laundry, clipping coupons, whatever, because I find that if I leave they start to wander.

  41. Ed Nemmers says:

We make certain that there are no distractions!

  42. Marion B says:

She does it as soon as she comes home from school so its out of the way and then she can play the rest of the evening.

  43. Carol Drury says:

I try to make it as stress free as possible – clean uncluttered place to work – I try to stay calm – no stress is the key

  44. Diana Hogle says:

    Homework need to be fun,

  45. TRACY HEYER says:

I try to let them have a little time to relax! Before they get to there homework! Cause that works out alot better and they do a better job!

  46. Helen says:

Schoolwork is done before dinner and if it still isn’t done, there aren’t any other fun activities until it’s done.

  47. Karen says:

I let my children wind down from the excitement of coming home and telling me about their day. Then we settle down at the kitchen tacle before dinner and we work on their homework. This leaves for a little family time after dinner.

  48. Kathy Scott says:

Homework is a good time to spend quality time with your child.

  49. Tammy says:

We homeschool so our schoolwork is done all throughout the day! We take short breaks in between subjects to make it not so overwhelming.
