So, for some reason, every handy person (and a few who aren’t the least bit handy!) seems to get stricken with the sudden urge to do a major home renovation project over Labor Day. Maybe it is because the kids are going back to school and starting on new projects of their own or maybe it is because they suddenly realize that summer is ended and they haven’t done any renovations that they had planned to do. The important thing is making sure that they don’t regret starting that project for the rest of their lives!

When you are planning a Labor Day project you’ve never done before, there are a few steps that can make the whole thing a lot less stressful:
- Research techniques ahead of time. Check home improvement sites or get some books from the library.
- Make a shopping list and buy your supplies ahead of time, too. Those big box stores are crowded over the Labor Day weekend!
- Estimate the time your project will take and then double it. That way, you won’t have upset family members when it turns out your 2 hour project took 3 and a half hours and you missed out on a lot of fun activities.
- Be sure that you can leave the project unfinished until the weekend is over if it turns out to be too complicated. Getting bailed out by the plumber on Labor Day weekend is not cheap. Not cheap at all!
