I discovered at a very early age, elementary school, carving a Polar bear from a bar of Ivory soap….this is fun!. More than sixty years later, pleasure still drives me to keep making “stuff”.
Claude DeBussy said, “Making music (art), is all about pleasure.” Freud, Franz Boas, Henri Bergson all agreed with him.
It is all about pleasure, hedonistic, self gratifying , aesthetic pleasure…getting and giving as well.
If you are making your “art” for any other reason, you’re fooling yourself and you are not having any fun…….
Message, inspiration, symbolism, evocation of emotion….all are secondary.
My inspiration comes from those remnants of ancient cultures that have survived the ages; ruins, artifacts, cermonial objects. The secondary motive of my work is an attempt to evoke the mysteries that emanate from these remains.
The fuel that propels that inspiration is four-fold: Mozart, Mahler, Miles, & beer.

Thanks for introducing us to Lester Weise’s art! I went to his gallery and really enjoyed viewing his work.
My pleasure! Fun stuff, isn’t it?
He’s a clever writer as well as an artist!
I love the bowl especially. It makes me want to dive right in.
