Light a Candle to Illuminate your Heart and your Mind

Often, on a Sunday morning, I’ll head over to the display of candles at my church and light one in memory of someone in my life that has passed away. Lighting a candle reminds me, when I’m grieving, that God is light. Even in times of great darkness, like in death, God is light. My belief in Him is comforting and reassuring and sometimes I need that visual reminder of His presence — and His mastery over death.

I love that candle-lighting ritual; a gesture that takes me out of darkness and illuminates the world around me. Lighting a candle creates peace, serenity and calm in my life when the opposite prevails. Lighting a candle is perfect on a rainy weekday morning after a reflective Memorial Day weekend.

But I couldn’t get to church this morning. But I know if my heart, I didn’t need to be in a church to step out of the darkness and into the light.

We can emulate this ritual online.

See, today I was searching for a way to honor those that breast cancer defeated over the weekend. I woke up in the rain thinking about these people. Dark, I know, that’s why I needed light. I needed to light a candle. And I found one to light.

Click here to light a candle of your own or read my message (search for a candle bearing the initials “KML”).

Like this idea? You can also light a candle here, here or here — oooh, here’s a fun one! Or get specific: click here to light a candle for peace, click here to light a candle for anyone touched by AIDS.

Let me know if you have another place you like to light candles for a cause — online or off.
