Limit what your teen can do in the car

Earlier this week, Ford announced a new device called MyKey which will allow parents to control the car for their teenage drivers. MyKey lets you decide the top speed a car can reach, how loud the stereo can go, and will even emit an over-the-top loud warning for lack of seatbelt use. You can also set it to give out warnings if your teen starts to accelerate closer to the top speed.

MyKey will first be made available in 2010 starting with the Ford Focus, and will eventually be a standard feature in other cars like the Lincoln and Mercury models.

The number of teenage deaths in auto accidents is astounding and incredibly sad. Limiting the speed at which your kid can drive is a great way to be sure they’re going to slow down – they have no choice, and by limiting stereo volume you know they aren’t as distracted by their favorite song as they might be if they could blast it.

What do you think? Too much or about time?
