Charlie does love his iPod but we’ve been through 4 pairs of headphones in just over 2 weeks. I’m trying to see how long the kind of headphones used in school classrooms might work—and checking out this “how to” site.

Quick answer to your question about how long headphones last in classrooms: not very. If you find something durable, please share it. I can’t be the only teacher that reads your blog.
I got these because the price was right—Charlie already has pulled off the pads. Now they’re back on and the headphones have lasted for 2 days……so far!
We have the same problem with the headphones. We recently bought a pair of ear protection headphones at Home Depot(like for folks using weedwackers and other noisy equipment). My son LOVED them for just blocking out noise but then I realized that by tucking earbuds (which my son won’t wear) under the foam inside, they worked to both block outside noise and let him listen to his music too. These cheap (less than $20) foldable ear phones are really sturdy. I’m not sure he’d ever be able to break the headband part (which is the part that usually goes first on most headphones) and because the earbuds are tucked behind the foam, it should be difficult for him to break them.
Of course, I just had this revelation a few days ago so my theory is still being tested…. but I think it could work.
