1. BudgetOnWeb

This is more for businesses. You can manage your budget, schedule and contracts. This system integrates project management with contact management and financial tools. The great thing about this system is that you can access your data from anywhere in the world.

2. SimpleD

SimpleD Budget is an open source Windows application. This is a great tool for household budgets. You keep track of your finances through categories. As you spend money, you punch it in under the right category. As long as you are consistent with updating SimpleD, it will tell you how much money you have left in each category. This is similar to the envelope system, but it’s computerized.

3. Grisbi

Grisbi is a personal finance management application running under GNU/Linux and Windows. You can manage multiple accounts, currencies and users. You can read an exhaustive list of Grisbi’s functions through their website.

4. AceMoneyLite

This has just about every feature you would need for a household budgeting software program. You can not manage multiple accounts but you can track your spending habits, create and manage budgets, track investments, import information from online banks, plan debt and mortgage payments and the list goes on and on.

5. Account Xpress 3.3.4

With Account Xpress you can track transactions for accounts such as credit cards, savings, checking, cash and more. This software is simple to use and will be a benefit to anyone wanting to take control of their finances.

6. MAKE$.CENTS Envelope Budgeting Software 4.0.1.15

This is a great tool for helping you to get out of credit card debt and start saving for retirement. This system is for Windows.

7. PearBudget

PearBudget is written in Excel and is excellent budgeting software. You can use it on practically any spreadsheet program such as Excel, Word and Open Office. They are currently developing an online version. You can go to their website and enter your email address to find out when they launch and possibly even test it once they do.

8. Buddi

Buddi is called “financial management for the rest of us”. It’s aimed at those who have little or no financial background and they have made things as simple as possible. If you are very new to everything financial related and you want to create and maintain your finances, this would be a great software to start with.

9. Budget 4.0.2

If you are familiar with the envelope system and you are interested in trying it, here is some software based on that. This system you set up and live by your budget. The visual is actual envelopes that you allocate amounts to. It will also show you, at a glance, if you are living by your budget.

10. MySpendingPlan

MySpendingPlan’s slogan is “Plan Better. Save More. Live Smart.”. This is one of the best free software programs I have ever seen. There are so many features. Here are just a few things you can manage: home budgets, vacation planning, home remodeling, print grocery coupons and set a budget for organizations you are working with. This is an online version of the tried and true envelope system.

Good post! For anyone looking to escape the cubicle and set up their own business getting a hold on your outgoings is a must. I will enjoy trying a few of these out.

Thanks Tim. I just got all of our finances set up on one of these. I like the system much better than the one we were using…aka a spreadsheet. :)
