Did you know that the way a person writes could give you insight into their personality and how they might act within a relationship?
Michelle Dresbold, handwriting analyst and author of Sex, Lies, and Handwriting: A Top Expert Reveals the Secrets Hidden in Your Handwriting explains how the way a person writes relates directly to the way that they live their life.
“You write your signature for other people. Your signature is how you want to portray yourself to the world, while the rest of your writing displays how you really are. If your signature is very different from the rest of your handwriting, what you show to the public is not necessarily what you feel inside. You can have one image for the world and another image of yourself internally.”
That makes me think of a performer with a showy signature. They write like a star – they act like a star. I’m not interested in dating a star.
Look at how a person crosses a T. If they don’t cross it all the way, it shows that they are a person who does not finish things. When seeking a partner, you want someone who sees things through. Avoid the non-crossers.
When a person lies, they hesitate. If you look at their writing this will be noticeable by a gap or a change in the sentence alignment – it shows a lack of flow, a hesitancy where the writer used that break to come up with an excuse. This reminds me of the notes I used to forge to get out of class. Sorry Mom!! I’m a good girl now.
Thinking about sex? It will show in your writing.
“There are different things that can show obsession. People like Michael Jackson have phallic symbols in their handwriting. Usually that means an obsession with sex. Lower loops can represent the emphasis people put into physical action below the waist. These symbols could also appear in your writing if you’re thinking about sex more than you usually do.”
Messy writing can signal creativity or bursts of thought, while overly neat writing can signify a lack of spontaneity. Overly round writing can show a lack of maturity or focus. A healthy adult will have a combination of angled and curved writing.
If you know someone who dots their periods with an exaggerated grinding, well you may want to give that person some space. Heavy grinding is a sign that they are feeling angry or resentful or stuck. I’ve sen my kids do that on their homework papers. Kids resenting homework? Yep, theory sounds about right.
Size matters…….
“When you write large, you feel free. A person who likes to be seen will have writing that’s noticeable and free. If you try and write really, really tiny, you need to focus more and block out the rest of the world. People who write this way are focused on their tasks and don’t really notice what is going on around them.”
How do you feel about staying within the margins? If a person chooses to ignore the left margins, it shows a lack of regard for society’s rules. Honestly, I don’t think that I’ve ever seen anyone ignore the left margin before. Sounds pretty odd.
Lots of angles show intensity or rage. Hitler wrote this way and he’s not a guy known for his good cheer. In fact, I’d say he was markedly cranky.
A’s and O’s are your “communication” letters. They show how clearly you are able to communicate. OJ Simpson makes a slash through his O’s – called a “forked tongue stroke” and it’s known as the mark of a liar, a bad communicator. I wonder about that one, though, because when you are taught cursive, you are taught to connect the O to the next letter and the shape you make is very similar. I’m not sure I’m on board with that one, but on the other hand, I do believe that OJ is a liar.
A con artist’s writing will look very neat and pleasing to the eye at first glance, but it will not always be readable. A letter will look like it could be a T or a J or possibly a V. Their numbers will look the same. That would mean that they are always trying to mislead even when they are not thinking about doing it intentionally. Scott Peterson’s writing shows a good sample of this bad guy example.
The way you write the letter G can say a lot about you and how you view your life. If the bottom of a handwritten capitol G looks like a frown, then it is called a “Felon’s Claw.” It is not a good sign. Many felons write this way. I was married to a former felon. I’m not anymore. Learn from my mistake. Check the G.
What do you think? Are you going to ask your next date for a writing sample? Do you know someone who writes like a con artist? How about your own writing? See anything you need to work on?

I’ve always found the handwritting analysis stuff very interesting. Now I’m surely going to be “checking myself” as well as others!
Leah, when I write my signature, I don’t always cross the T, I do dot the I, but I usually leave the H off entirely. What does that mean?? Eek. ;D
I was into handwriting analysis years ago, so I still notice people’s handwriting, what is is saying. As a profession I think it is called graph analysis, people who do that testify in court sometimes, when it has to with legal documents. I know people who write big, and they tend to dress loud, which I find totally interesting. Why? Since we don’t realize it about ourselves, we learn stuff we would never of found out otherwise. Great post.
Thanks, Jenni! I am very glad that you enjoyed it. It’s really a pretty fascinating subject.
