Low Functioning Adults with Autism in Spain

We, here in America, often wonder how other countries are handling the situation with escalating autism rates. The issues of housing for adults on the autism spectrum is now a problem that has recently been “put on the table,” for discussion and brainstorming.
Evidently, the country of Spain, has a bit better handle on it than the Americans do. Low-functioning autism is still a huge challenge and hurdle for American society. In Spain, there is a wonderful center for handling people just like this. It is located in north-eastern Spain, about 70 miles from Barcelona.
Mas Casadevall, the name of the adult autism center, has been in existence for 18 years. 18 adults live there currently, with about 8 more coming in during the day while they would otherwise have no one else to care for them.
I believe that Mas Casadevall is a good model for us to follow. The stories we hear of in the press about group homes and institutions horrify and frighten parents. There are alternatives and this is one of those choices.
