Lowering the bar on parenting

Along with being an expectant father comes a healthy dose of nervousness about my suitability as a parent. Will I be nurturing enough or will I provide him with enough opportunities? Will I provide a safe and healthy environment for him to grow up in?

I have a usual list of things I worry about for my child, but after reading this post over at Parents Behaving Badly, I realized that like Donielle Maki, I hadn’t even considered one of the cornerstones of good parenting; don’t leave your LSD-laced candy lying around the house. Unbelievable.

Some people just shouldn’t have children. A. She brought drugs around a child and B.THEY WERE CANDIES, of course a kid will eat them. Donielle, you may want to keep your pacifier-shaped crack rocks locked up as well.

  1. I don’t want to scare you, but that feeling about your own suitability as a parent never goes away, at least not by the point I’m at. I have a three year old and this Saturday I’ll have a two year old.

One of the hardest things is knowing what to worry about and what to leave to work out on it’s own. You may feel by 8 months that “this kid will grow up permanently warped if we don’t get him off the bottle NOW!”, but in reality, kids are “programmed” and in both of my cases, they one day just pushed the bottle away and never took it again. That’s just one example of many.

I think in life we have many choices to make. And for some reason ,which I will never understand, some just make the worst one’s possible when it comes to raising children.

There are so many stories we read about bad parents and abuse,it’s crazy. And yet it always repeats itself with some people. Most humans can determine right and wrong, and it’s so simple. But then there is another story out about histroy repeating itself .
