Maid By Day.

I know this topic has been discussed and analyzed ad nauseam, probably going all the way back to Cleopatra…but I feel I have to take a look at it as well.

Why are women so much better than men at multi-tasking? I believe the answer lies within the notion that growing up, men were told to “go out and play” and girls were told to help with the chores — at least that’s the way it worked in my house.

Because I now work from home, I’m certain there is a silent code which says, you’re home, you may as well be the chef, the the waitress, the building maintenance guy, the gardener and the trash guy. (Notice I use the more gentle reference of “building maintanence”, rather than maid?)

Well, if this is my new paradoxical lot in life, I can happily say that I’ve taught myself how to get many opposing things done within the same time frame — I’m sure many of you are much better at this than I am:

  • change the bedding-gotothesupermarket-walkthedog-writeablog-handlecustomers.

I have a neighbor who has been working from home because he recently had heart attack and must reduce his commute.

Recently he whined that because he is home he is “…expected to be the maid”. I took exception to his comment because not only did it sound like he’s soooooo busy, he couldn’t possibly wash a dish and get his work done, but his carp came out sounding like only women are maids.

I say this: cut down on the fantasy football and questionable websites and focus. It’s not that hard to do more than 3 things at once…you just need to prioritize…and start what you finish.

Oh, and if you do choose to cook dinner once in a while, you have to bend down to get to the produce drawer :) .

    Hi Hsien,

It might be a blessing in disguise…I know cereal would be on the dinner menu a LOT if I didn’t cook…LOL.

  3. Hsien Lei says:

Cereal sounds good to me! My hubby’s not coming home for dinner tonight. I might just cook a little pot of oatmeal. :D

  4. Kim says:

mmm…maybe a piece on the heart healthiness of oatmeal?
