Make Your Bed!

oak-sleigh-bed.jpgThis is a Motivate Me Monday post.

I was just telling you about SELF magazine’s 30 days to getting organized and Make Your Bed was their first tip. I think this was an excellent choice for the first tip to share because it’s simple enough for anyone to do.

So, for this whole week make every effort you can to make your bed as soon as you get out of it. Unless of course someone else is still in there, lol! Then make them do it! :)

Here’s a quote from SELF’s tip:

It’s the fastest way to render your boudoir peaceful and presentable.

I always feel much better walking into a room with a made bed. Your whole room can be a mess, but if the bed is made, it can help the room look a bit more presentable.

Technically from a scientific standpoint you should NOT make your bed. I see Self’s point that this is an easy place to start organizing but science has shown that the neater your bed the more likely you are to have dust mites in the actual bed. As it turns out bugs are much more tidy than people think and dust mites love a super nice flatly made bed where as a bed that’s not made turns them off for some reason. It’s the same with cockroaches — they like a clean house better than a dirty one so… what to do?

I make my bed but make it sort of sloppy in hopes of pleasing me and not the bugs. As to the cockroaches; I’m not in New Mexico anymore so it doesn’t matter!

Jennifer: I’ve heard that before. I still make my bed though. I just can’t stand it unmade. I’ve heard a big part of it is changing your sheets once a week. I am always amazed at how long people wait to change their sheets. It’s just gross.

Oh the New Mexico cockroaches…lived there, dealt with that before. They breed them BIG around there. That was not a fin 8 months that we lived there. Yuck. I despise those things.

I was taught by my (now elderly) mother that it was best to air the bed before remaking, and this makes sense to me when you consider the perspiration etc that has been left during the night.

I leave my bed to air for at least 30 mins while I do other chores around the house, and of course this is no hassle because I make sure I get up with enough time to do this airing before having to leave the house each morning.

That’s a good tip Judy. Thank you. :)
