Make Your Own Barbecue Sauce

Since we’re now officially getting into barbecue season, I thought I’d share one of my favorite recipes for homemade barbecue sauce. I love this sauce on chicken, but it also works well on ribs, or pork. This recipe makes enough sauce to marinade about 3 pounds of meat.

Homemade Barbecue Sauce

1 cup of ketchup
1/2 cup of butter
1/2 cup water
the juice of 1/2 of a lemon or about 1/4 cup of vinegar
1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of pepper
1 tablespoon of brown sugar
1 medium onion finely chopped

Brown the onion in the butter in a large skillet, then add the water and heat to boiling. Add the rest of the ingredients to the mixture and let it cool. This sauce is even better if you let it sit for a couple hours before you use it to allow the flavors to blend together. You can refrigerate the barbecue sauce for several days, or use it right away.

When you’re ready to use the sauce, just brush it on your chicken or pork when it’s almost ready to come off the grill.
