Make Your Stairs Work for You – Stair Storage

At my house, we have a shoe basket near the door. It’s where the shoes are “supposed” to go after the kids take them off. Living in Alaska for three years got us in the habit of taking our shoes off when we entered the house. Well, honestly, the shoes make it to the basket every once and awhile. They usually like to sit in the middle of the floor somewhere so that I can easily trip over them or piled up by the basket like the picture above.
Maybe my kids would learn to put their shoes away if we had a cooler place to put them, like….in the stairs. Check out this picture of stair storage.

Now this is what I call being smart with your space! From the picture it looks like the bottom two stairs are for storage. I love storage that is hidden. No one would even know this was here unless you told them.
There are so many things you could use this space for – shoes, linens, hats, mittens, books.
What a brilliant idea this is and if I ever have a house built, you can bet I’ll be showing the builder this post and this picture. This is an organizing freak’s dream.

Yep, you’re a freak. lol Just kidding. This is pretty cool.
One of my biggest problem with organizing stuff is rationalizing the cost. Is this bin worth this amount to me? Are the clothes that are going on that shelf worth the amount of the shelf? It is really a set back for me. Maybe it wouldn’t be if I knew we were in a house where we’d stay put for a while.
That’s really neat. Did you see this one?

I sooo what one of these.
It’s exactly what I’d like to do when having my own house! And not only stairs! I’m thinking, just like you, about “hidden storage”. My kids are just beginning to learn how to put on their shoes, learning to store them the right way, it’s completely other thing.
If you come across more ideas like this one (with hidden storage) please share, I’m a fan!
What a great idea if you had wooden stairs like that. Ours are carpet so it wouldn’t work.
@Karen – you already knew I was a freak.
@Sandy – I did see those. That post led me to these stairs. Very cool aren’t they?
@kpriss – I’ll definitely look for more hidden storage. I love it!
@Jen – I thought it was brilliant to, but yeah, wouldn’t work with carpet.
