Making an abstract collage that focuses on shape and repetition

Technique Tuesday!

Cosmic Flowers is a fantasy abstract that I created when I was fooling around with repetition of shapes. I would recommend reviewing my post on creating an abstract, where I quoted Nita Leland’s explanation that the elements and principles of design are what an abstract is really “about”. To add a bit to that here, let me share another quote with you from Nita’s Creative Collage Techniques:

The elements of design are the tools with which you construct the framework for your collage….The principles of design are the rules that you apply to the elements of design to organize your collage into a unified whole.

    Hey Cyndi,

I’ve emailed you twice. Please let me know if you’ve gotten either one???

  2. Cyndi L says:

Got it this time! Thanks so much :-)

  3. Christy says:

Another great collage and very interesting and useful information. I will be playing a bit more with abstracts after reading this.

  4. Cyndi L says:

Thanks, Christy! I found abstracts really intimidating at first since I usually worked with vintage images and my own photos

  5. Connie G. says:

I am amazed at this project. I never knew collage art could be so creative.

  6. Cyndi L says:

Thank you, Connie! I find that what works best for me, if I don’t already have an idea in mind, is simply to pick one or two design elements and start playing. And add some stitching too, of course LOL!!

  7. Tammy says:

Even though it is abstract, it isn’t all that “out there,” as far as design. Sometimes abstracts are just too much for me, but I like this sample you provided.

  8. Cyndi L says:

There are several types of abstracts that I really like, and one is this type, where the overall design reminds you of something (flowers, in this case). But I also like the expressionists, who really divorced their paintings from the object that inspired it. It all depends :-)
