Making Memories, Minus the Notes

2002 Lexington Meritage Last night was a marathon session of good food, good wines, and good times. Rosenblum Cellars was having a party for our former shareholders, and my friend Kelly was working the wine club table.  Meanwhile, Trisha came over and she and BK helped me get dinner together while we waited for the party to end.  Of course, we had to sip while we chopped, stirred, blended, etc.  By the time Kelly arrived, we had already each consumed a martini and broken into the bubbly.  Since I was making individual Beef Wellington’s for the main course, I narrowed the wine choice down to three different Meritage blends.  Luckily, I decided on the 2002 Thomas Fogarty Lexington, a medley of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cab Franc. It was lucky because I had a feeling I probably wouldn’t take notes….

making creme bruleeWhich I didn’t, but I do remember everyone loving the meal and the wine pairing.  The wine was softer than when I last had it, but it still showed the tobacco, black currant, and depth that I remembered from my days at Fogarty. We finished the meal with creme brulee, half topped with banana and the other with strawberry. With it, we had a bit of Warre’s Otima 10 year old tawny (the first Port I truly loved). And somehow, there were no mishaps with the mini blow torch that we had to light from a burner.

after a long night and too many turns with the cameraWe all had a great time, and of course, I never get tired of hearing others celebrate my culinary genius. I am going to attribute their praise to my skills and not to the amount of alcohol comsumed.  Though I didn’t even take pictures of the meal or notes on any of the wines, I I’ll remember the night for a long time. But it’s still a good thing I have another Lexington waiting in the wine fridge for a more cognizant tasting.

  1. sounds like a fun time. I still need to get my hands on some Fogarty wine and try it as you speak fondly of it quite often.
    Cheers

It was and you should, John. If you haven’t gotten any by the time you come out to CA, you might want to consider a visit to Fogarty, as it’s quite beautiful up there.
